» Who We Are

Sumoud (steadfastness in Arabic), is a political prisoner solidarity group established by a group of organizers in Toronto, Canada. We gather information and resources primarily around Palestinian political prisoners being held by Israel, of which there are approximately 11,000 currently behind bars. We also take up the imprisonment of political dissidents as well as indigenous, refugee, immigrant and racialized people workdwide, as well as the role of the prison industrial complex in criminalizing poverty and political resistance. Central in our approach is an understanding of the illegitimacy of the prison as an institution in itself and the need for its abolition. Sumoud is part of the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid network and the Global Campaign for Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions against the Israeli apartheid Regime.

[Ramallah, 24 November 2009] On 23 November 2009, after 61 days of detention for the purpose of interrogation by Israeli Security Agency officers, human rights defender Mohammad Othman received his first administrative detention order. The administrative detention order is set for a three month period, during which time Mohammad will be held without charge or trial. The judicial review of the order is scheduled to take place on 25 November at the Military Court of Administrative Detainees in Ofer Military Base, near the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Take Action to Demand a Public Inquiry into Canada's First 9/11 Rendition to Torture

While headlines rightfully scream about the scandal of Canadian troops transferring Afghan detainees to torture, an Algerian refugee here in Canada continues waging a lonely struggle to determine why Canadian officials decided to illegally render him to the United States on September 12, 2001 with the false, dangerously inflammatory accusation that as a Muslim who knew about airplanes, he was connected to 9/11. The resultant five years of indefinite detention in the U.S. under conditions that the United Nations declared constituted torture continue to haunt Mr. Benatta, who was eventually returned to Canada where his refugee claim was accepted (adding further concerns that a person in need of protection was so callously thrown back to the U.S., from whence he could have been deported to his death in Algeria).

Justice for Migrant Workers!

Join Coalition for Change and our allies.

* Organize actions in your community!
* Make it loud and clear to Immigration Minister Jason Kenney that we won't let immigrants be turned into a disposable workforce with no rights!
* Demand real protections for migrant workers!

Regulations introduced on October 9, 2009 essentially deny the right of full status to temporary migrant workers by restricting them to working four years in Canada and barring them from returning to the country for six years.

The regulations come in to force on December 9, 2009. Unless we stop them!
The Prison as University: The Palestinian Prisoners' Movement and National Education

Khaled al-Azraq, a political prisoner for the past twenty years, tells us how the Palestinian prisoners' movement has educated its cadre. Originally published in al-Majdal (issue #42, Autumn 2009)

Let me start by saying that the role of the Palestinian prisoners' movement in educating its cadre, and thereby contributing to Palestinian “national education” is a large topic, and one worthy of much more discussion and research. As a Palestinian political prisoner who has spent the past twenty years in Israeli jails I would like to highlight some of the general characteristics of the prisoners' movement's struggle to build a system of self and collective education as a central part of developing a patriotic and revolutionary culture that can be a pillar of the liberation movement.

On June 15th, The U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the case of Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René, known as the Cuban 5. Yet another insult on the part of Made in USA-justice. Despite the worldwide clamor in favor of the freedom of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters, this country’s highest judicial body turned a “deaf ear” and thus the Cuban 5 remain U.S. held Political Prisoners! Last year, a federal appeals court ordered new sentences for Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, and Antonio Guerrero. Labañino and Guerrero had been serving life terms, and Gonzalez was sentenced to 19 years.

It has been 46 days since Mohammad Othman, a long-time human rights defender and activist with the “Grassroots Stop the Wall Campaign”, was arrested at the Allenby Bridge Crossing between Jordan and the West Bank and held for interrogation. On the day of his arrest, 22 September 2009, Mohammad was on his way back to Ramallah from an advocacy tour in Norway where he had been engaged in a number of speaking events.

Canada Deported Mexican Woman to her Death

Nicholas Keung
Toronto Star

"A woman between the ages of 20 and 30 was found murdered – and with evidence of childbirth – with blows to her body and a bullet in the forehead, a classic revenge from drug trafficking," said a June 5 story in the Mexican newspaper El Informador de Jalisco.

A death certificate later classified the woman's death as a homicide.

What the coroner's office didn't mention was that the 24-year-old murder victim and her mother and sister had twice sought refuge in Canada, in 2004 and 2008, from drug traffickers. The same men are thought to have kidnapped and killed young Grise, leaving the fate of her baby unknown, after she was forced back to Mexico.

Christoph Schult / Der Spiegel (via PNN)- Hundreds of Palestinians are kept behind bars in Israel without charges having been filed and with no access to a fair trial.

Not even their lawyers are allowed to look at the evidence. Some governments in the West have expressed their concern, but the Israelis haven’t budged.
