Facts on Palestinian Prisoners (Source: Palestinian Ministry of Detainee Affairs)
Kole | 07/18/2006 - 17:27
The following fact sheet was prepared on the basis of the most recent report of the Palestinian Ministry for Detainee Affairs (distributed by the French based 'Centre d'Information sur la Résistance en Palestine' and translated into English by the SUMOUD Political Prisoner Solidarity Group)
* 9850 prisoners are currently being held in Zionist prisons, including 40 deputies of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and 7 ministers. The new report of the statistics department of the Detainee Affairs ministry establishes the following:
* Since 1967, the occupation authorities have arrested more than 700,000 Palestinians and roughly 50,000 since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
* Today, more than 9850 prisoners are distributed throughout more than 30 prisons and detention centres, including 720 prisoners from the Gaza Strip, and the others from the West Bank, Al-Quds (Jerusalem), Palestinian lands occupied in 1948 and from Arab countries, including 553 detained prior to the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
Of this number:
* 4430 prisoners have been sentenced by Israeli military tribunals and 4575 are still being held without a sentence. More than 845 are in administrative detention.
* 2588 prisoners are married.
* 610 prisoners have been condemned to more than 50 years in prison.
* 698 prisoners have been condemned to sentences ranging from 15 to 50 years in prison.
Women Political Prisoners
* There are 105 women political prisoners in Zionist prisons and detention centers at the moment. In total 500 women have been arrested during the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
* 97 of the women political prisoners are from the West Bank, 5 from Al-Quds and Palestinian lands occupied in 1948, 3 from the Gaza strip.
* 76 women political prisoners have been sentenced, 24 are awaiting sentencing and 5 are in administrative detention. 3 of the women political prisoners have given birth within the prisons walls.
Child Political Prisoners
* 359 children are still being detained.
* In total 4000 child political prisoners have been arrested and detained by the Zionist military since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
* Of the 359 child political prisoners arrested, 131 children have been sentenced, 223 children are awaiting sentencing, and 5 are in administrative detention. 3 of the child political prisoners are young women.
* 99% of the children being detained have been tortured during their arrests and interrogations (including hooding, use of the ‘shabeh’ torture position, physical violence, death threats, and attempts to turn them into collaborators/informants for the Israeli military).
* Among the detained children, 90 are sick and deprived of the required medical care. 500 of the detained were detained as children but have grown older than 18 and are still in prison. The children are deprived of all the rights they are guaranteed under international treaties.
Attack on Palestinian democracy:
* 40 Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) representatives are currently being detained.
* 27 of these deputies were arrested in late-June following the resistance operation “Shattered Illusion” that captured a Zionist soldier. 13 deputies were detained before this date.
* 7 Ministers of the Palestinian government have also been detained. Only one minister, Samir Abu Aysha, the Minister of Planning, has been released after the payment of a 5000 shekel ransom.
The report also specifies that:
* 7 prisoners currently being detained have spent more than 25 years in Zionist prisons. The oldest of these is Sa'id Atabeh, who’s been detained for 29 years. Another 57 prisoners have been detained between 20-25 years.
* More than 1000 prisoners are suffering from various chronic diseases and 200 are suffering from serious health conditions. Prisoners are deprived of the necessary care, necessary surgeries that are required by medical analysis for the treatment of their conditions.
* Concerning the torture practiced within the Zionist state’s prisons and detention centers, the occupying authorities are pursuing the practice of torture, legalized by that State. 99% of the detainees were physically brutalized, 60% of the detainees were placed in the ‘freezer,’ 89% were subjected to the ‘shabeh’ torture position, 42% were held in standing positions for a prolonged period of time, often lasting several consecutive days.
* The number of martyrs of the national prisoner movement has risen to 183 martyr prisoners. 69 died following torture, 42 as a result of medical negligence and 72 martyrs were assassinated in cold-blood following their arrest. The execution of prisoners is a practice that is increasingly being normalized by the occupation authorities, notably among West Bank residents taken prisoner.
